  • 'BIO-NMR', Barcelona, Spain
Event date: 2012-03-12 An event entitled 'BIO-NMR' will take place from 12 to 13 March 2012 in Barcelona, Spain. A complete understanding of the most relevant biological processes can be achieved only by the three-dimensional description of the biomolecules and the complexes involved in these functions. Increasing evidence demonstrates the fundamental role of conformational dynamics in biological activity. With its versatility, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has notably furthered understanding of molecular function from a structural and dynamic perspective. Computational tools have been crucial for the full exploitation of the wide variety of parameters that can be measured by NMR, and have made a considerable contribution to the derivation of more accurate structural and dynamic models of biomolecules. This event is being sponsored by the EU-funded 'NMR for structural biology' (BIO-NMR) project, which is seeking to link the power of NMR to structural, dynamic, kinetic and thermodynamic information. The project partners are seeking to develop methods aimed at pushing the frontiers of biological NMR and improving the quality of access to allow users to tackle ever more challenging goals in cellular structural biology.

  • 'NEUROPT project workshop', Milan, Italy
Event date: 2012-03-12 The 'NEUROPT project workshop' will take place from 12 to 13 March 2012 in Milan, Italy. The event will look at the results of the EU-funded 'Non-invasive imaging of brain function and disease by pulsed near infrared light' (NEUROPT) project. The workshop's agenda will include a wide variety of discussions based on the individual components of the project, including: - novel strategies for time-domain diffuse optical imaging of the brain; - development and testing of novel photonic devices; - modelling and computation; - development of instrumentation for clinical applications; - standardisation and quality assurance; - processing and analysis of clinical data; - clinical tests; - evaluation of novel methodologies. The aim of the project has been to the development and clinical validation of advanced non-invasive optical methodologies for in-vivo diagnosis, monitoring, and prognosis of major neurological diseases (stroke, epilepsy, ischemia), based on diffuse optical imaging by pulsed near infrared light. The project brought together 17 entities from the United Kingdom, Germany, Poland and Italy.

  • International symposium on stem cells and human liver disease, Paris, France
Event date: 2012-03-12 An event entitled 'International symposium on stem cells and human liver disease' will take place from 12 to 13 March 2012 in Paris, France. Many forms of human liver disease can currently be treated only with orthotopic liver transplant. Biological and technical advances related with human embryonic stem cells suggest that pluripotency may provide an alternative cell-based therapy for liver disease. The development of methods and tools to engineer stem cells is necessary to generate renewable cultures for clinical-grade, cell therapies. The conference will highlight recent progress in liver development and stem cell differentiation in the context of cell therapy for chronic liver disease. Among the topics on the agenda will be: - liver development ; - differentiation of stem cells to hepatocytes; - stem cell bioengineering; - perspectives: clinical applications; - perspectives: phamaco/toxicology; - use of stem cells in regenerative strategies. This event is sponsored by the EU-funded 'Development of culture conditions for the differentiation of hES cells into hepatocytes' (LIV-ES) project, which is looking at ways of developing innovative conditions and standardised protocols to provide a renewable source of human hepatocytes (liver cells) for the treatment of liver diseases.

  • 'Sustainable protein supply', Amsterdam, the Netherlands
Event date: 2012-03-12 A workshop entitled 'Sustainable protein supply' will take place on 16 March 2012 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The global demand for animal protein (such as meat and milk proteins) is increasing rapidly. This is caused by the growing world population and reinforced by the increasing income per capita in industrialising countries in Asia and South America. Reducing the environmental impact of the global protein consumption is of crucial importance to allow meeting the needs for future generations. The event will look at optimising animal protein production with respect to environmental impact and developing alternatives to conventional animal protein-based products. It will also look at the politics regarding sustainable protein supply and EU initiatives related to the topic.

  • International conference on mobile learning, Berlin, Germany
Event date: 2012-03-11 An international conference on mobile learning will take place from 11 to 13 March 2012 in Berlin, Germany. Since the advent of mobile learning, developments in its practice and research have been carried along by technological innovation and advancement. Laptops, for example, have given rise to new models of technology integration and accessibility within the classroom and freed technology from the 'imprisonment' of computer rooms. In the same way, handheld devices have made it possible contextual outdoor learning and freed learners and technologies from the confinement of a building. With developments seemingly speeding up, there is an increasing relevance and need for mobile learning research focused on pedagogically meaningful approaches to mobile learning and systematically evaluated with appropriate data collection and analysis tools. This event will be a forum for the presentation and discussion of mobile learning research which illustrate developments in the field. The overall programme will consists of invited talks and oral presentations.
